John is an officer retired from the Greek Navy, where he held ranks from Ensign up to Commander during 20 years of service. Among his posts, he was commanding officer on vessels of various types (Minesweepers, Minelayers, Fast Patrol Boats, DDEs). He served as tactical co-ordinator and flight navigator with the Fleet Air Arm. He was Chief of Staff of Minewarfare Command, and Staff Officer and Director of Defence, (ASW, AA, Boom defences, Intelligence) of the Naval Base in Souda Bay, Crete.

He was one-time Director of the Hellenic Navy School of Navigation and Director of Naval Tactical School. After his service, he became Director and Operations Manager of Yacht Chartering and Flotilla Companies in Greece, a member of the Royal Yachting Club of Greece, and a Member of the Royal Navy and Royal Albert Yacht Club in Portsmouth, UK.
